Welcome to Autism Together - the Wiltshire branch of
the NAS.
What is the
National Autistic Society?
It is the UK's leading charity for people with
autistic spectrum disorders and their families.
It runs a range of services including schools, a
further education college, adult centres, supported employment services
and a diagnostic centre which also trains professionals from all over
the country. It supports research and has an ever-expanding range of
publications.
The N.A.S has a growing number of branches, and
many local autistic societies are affiliated to it.
What is an
Autistic Spectrum Disorder?
Autistic Spectrum Disorder is the term used to
describe a condition that affects the way a person communicates and
relates to other people.
The term autistic spectrum is used because the
condition varies from person to person. Some people may also have
learning disabilities, while others are more able with average or above
average intelligence. Despite the wide ranging differences everyone
with the condition have
problems interacting with or understanding other people, using
obsessive or repetitive behavior and may not understand what others
might be thinking.
Conditions which are part of the autistic
spectrum include Autism (sometimes called Kanner syndrome or Classic
Autism) and Asperger Syndrome, and some experts also include Semantic
Pragmatic Disorder.
Wiltshire
Branch: Local Support for those touched by Autism
How can the Wiltshire Branch of the
N.A.S. help?
Our aim is to provide support to the child and
their carers leading to a fulfilling lifestyle for the child. Therefore
we can offer a variety of assistance in the following forms.
We can give you a chance to talk to other people
who understand what you are feeling. Our newsletter and website keep
you up to date with branch activities, local services and other
information concerning the autistic spectrum. We have a library of
books about the autistic spectrum which you can borrow. We run
occasional conferences and workshops for parents and professionals.
Is there a parent/carer handbook
available with local contacts in?
Yes, there is. Please look at the Information page to
download a PDF version. It is a useful, informative handbook with local
contact details and information on autism.
